We make every effort to offer
you as complete an experience as possible and are proud to be able to provide a variety of
short walks, long hikes, or all-day expeditions to nearby locations to experience the
beauty and diversity of tropical eco-systems.
Trips can include the Campanario Biological Reserve itself, Corcovado National Park,
deforested and impacted areas, local communities,
and/or the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve. Right off our shore, you can enjoy swimming,
snorkeling, and fishing.
We will also be happy to make arrangements so you
can enjoy a variety of specialty activities:
- scuba diving
- horseback riding
- kayaking through the mangrove reserve
- tour to Isla de
Caño biological reserve
Dont forget the simple daily pleasures of swimming,
building sand castles, bird watching, relaxing in a hammock, and watching beautiful
sunsets.
Proyecto Campanario boasts of a large and
rugged field station with all the simple comforts of home including a large kitchen and
dining hall, screened-in dormitories with bunk beds, tiled bathrooms, clothes washing
area, a large front porch, and a great view. In addition, we have
five newly
installed private tent cabins, each with its own garden
bathroom, and only a five minute walk from the field station.
Electricity is generated through solar panels for basic lighting and other essential power
needs. Supplemental lighting is by lantern or candlelight. The water is
potable, coming from natural springs.
TRANSPORTATION
Access to the Campanario Reserve is
generally by sea, departing from Sierpe, the closest town with all-weather roads. A
member of the Campanario staff will meet you at the designated place and time, according
to the tides, to transport you down the Sierpe river, through the largest mangrove forest
in Central America, out to the ocean and down the coast to Campanarios protected
cove. Once there, everyone hops out into the warm surf to help carry the cargo to the
field station, a short walk up the beach. There are no roads, no docks, and no traffic at
Campanario.
Travel to and from Sierpe from San José may be by plane
and taxi, rental vehicle, or chartered or public bus. The San José office staff can
assist you in making reservations to and from Sierpe, or you can sign up for one of our
packages which include transport to and from San José.
COMFORT AND SAFETY
We are concerned for your comfort and
safety so that your enjoyment of the rainforest and the area in general is unhampered.
Appropriate clothing, shoes, sun and bug protection are vital. We will send you a
recommended list of things to pack for Campanario and things to leave in San José. For
this purpose, we provide storage facilities in San José for your city
clothes. A first aid kit is maintained at the field station for dealing with minor
problems, and theres a cellular phone for critical communication with the outside
world. In addition, a boat is always available in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Because a significant amount of travel time is spent on the water, we do ask that all
visitors be able to swim.
Please remember that Campanario is a remote reserve where good physical condition and a
basic awareness of the out-of-doors are important. If you have a serious medical problem
and/or limitation, you should seriously consider your proposed visit.
